The Importance of Sacred Space

All manifest phenomena is sacred to a degree, being physical expressions of soul forces which have ultimately emanated from inner divine realms. Yet there are varying degrees of sacred when we understand this term from an energetic and purity perspective. Our modern world is not only full of physical toxins such as chemicals, plastics, bacterias and parasites, which can all negatively affect the body but energetic ones also on the unseen realms. These come in both sentient and non-sentient form. If we wish to operate, function or do any kind of spiritual connection we require tools and metaphysical knowledge to ensure our wellbeing and that of our spirit allies. We are intimately connected to realms of both dark and light and it is the objective of the spirit worker and seeker to hold in balance these aspects within in order to stand within the poise of power. One such tool, technique and skill which not only creates a safe interface between self and spirit but offers the container for this inner transformation is the building and evocation of ‘Sacred Space’.

The Magical Circle or Medicine Wheel takes many forms and has been the fundamental ritual of many traditions, most notably magical orders, the Craft and shamanism. The essential principle running through it’s myriad forms is the blueprint of life and creating accordance with the Energies and Beings of existence. The fundamental uses of this Circle of Truth is to illuminate the unseen, transform that which is out of alignment and form allegiance with inner contacts or spirit allies.
To form a strong and powerful sacred space takes time and dedication. Connections and co-creative agreements need to be formed with the allies who will hold each quadrant and principle of the space. These allies exist on many levels of life from the physical to the divine. Take for example the seven directions of the Celtic Medicine Wheel; East, South, West, North, Below, Above and Within. Not only can we orientate ourself upon the physical earth but these directions form a sphere on the Inner planes also, catalysing balance of consciousness between inner and outer. Each direction holds certain qualities and therefore associated allies which we call into our space as we move through the casting of the circle. Birds, plant spirits, elements and spiritual beings which correspond with the airy nature of the East are called on, felt and seen with inner vision to hold that part of the circle. And so for each of the directions. As the holder of the space we are not separate from it but it becomes an extension of our being-ness. Our personal connection to the qualities of the directions and the beings therein are fundamental to the strength and effectiveness of the circle.
As a magical device there is no one correct way of building this cosmic sphere as personal beliefs and understandings must merge with metaphysical lore. This is why there are so many forms of magic and many of them work.
Stepping into a well cast Sacred Space is a visceral experience as energies amplify, psychic senses activate, emotions can rise quicker, access to collective consciousness is easier and the veil between worlds is thinned yet there is the all important sense of safety which allows hidden, repressed and ashamed parts of the self to come to light for healing and integration. The space becomes a threshold of potentiality and change, how we interact with this catalysing force is subject to our personal will. To what degree we surrender to it’s holding is the degree to which we have accepted our Dweller at the Threshold, that protective personal gatekeeper which mediates between lower and higher mind, between the mundane and the divine. Each sacred space is therefore a tiny step forward in personal evolution and when we call our plant spirit allies to work with us in that space also, we are accelerating our spiritual evolution and helping to bring divine alignment into this world of chaos.
